In Their Element

“In Their Element” is a continuation of the themes I visited while making “In Context”. I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of a photograph framed, or somehow paired, with elements contained in the image. It is almost making it come to life! In this project I have images from the Oregon Coast mounted on a sheet of wood and framed with pieces of driftwood, placing these shots in their own setting.

Roy G. Biv

As a child, it was how we remembered the colors of the rainbow: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. Much like the rainbow itself, simultaneously simple and complex, I approached these paintings accordingly.

This seven painting series consisted of a blend of geometrical shapes and line work in an array of hues of any given color to create light and dark, shadow and highlight. And most importantly, they were fun to make and look at.

Dense-City

densecity8by Rachelle Clark

Rachelle’s show, “Dense-City”, is a series of black and white photographic collages emulating the overwhelming visual intake that derives from urban living. Layers of images compile to demonstrate the contradictions we live with but fail to notice, like the cracks in the sidewalks where the dandelions push through. Some pieces are as large as 4 ft. by 7 ft., all are framed in antique windows.

City Scapes

City Scape 7by Shawn Christopher

First things first, I’m a country boy from a small town in Montana.  I spent the first part of my life imagining what the Big City would be like as I sat in fields of prairie grass, visualizing the mountains were skyscrapers on the horizon.  I would listen for all the sounds that the city breathes at you on the breeze that chased the birds across the meadow.  All the while, living and learning how to appreciate the peacefulness and freedom of the country.  I painted the city scapes as I have come to know them after living in for the last 16+ years, fun and full of life, but recalling the skies of back home, expansive, beautiful, and peaceful.

Industrial Steel

industrycoilby Rachelle Clark

One reoccurring theme for me has become surrounding a photo in elements of its subject matter. This is a continuation of that theme — homemade welded steel frames around industrial images, the intent being to put the subject in its environment. Steel maintains a major role in our Industrial Revolution. It is that role I am attempting to capture with this exhibit, and pay homage to.

As Mother Intended

asmotherintended2by Shawn Christopher

I used no stains, sealers, or dyes in this project. It is comprised of exotic woods and slate, natural and untampered with. I arranged them in an aesthetically pleasing way, but that was the beginning and end of my meddling. I left them the way Mother Nature intended them to be.

In Context

incontextemptynestby Rachelle Clark In Context is a series of images whose subjects are connected to the pieces of wood they are mounted on, be next found in a tree or a fence line disappearing at a vanishing point. The concept being to place a stolen moment of time in context with a tangible element. The wood was varnished to seal it. The images are covered with plexiglass to protect them.

Life of a Grape

lifeofagrape6by Rachelle Clark

From bud break to bloom, fruit set to veraison, ripe into harvest; I watched and studied the Bishop Creek Vineyards for the last two growing seasons. I fought with the weather to achieve the photos I wanted, much as they fought with the weather for the conditions they needed. The 2006 summer was a long, hot summer that allowed them to take their time and get as sweet as they wanted. The 2007 summer was moodier and created a whole different style of beautiful characteristics. Yet, at all times, the grapes were growing, changing, and becoming something of their own. Attention to Detail

attentiontodetailbootlegginby Rachelle Clark

So often we fail to slow down long enough to take in the finer points of a moment. We glance around and only capture the overview. I find that sentiment and all that we find endearing is found within the details of a person or a landscape. This series is an attempt to pause long enough to extract the smaller points that are usually missed, and bring them out as the main focus.

The shadow box effect is an attempt to lend a 3-D quality to the images. I hope to allow you to feel as though you are staring out your window into the backyard and really see it for the first time.
